Students react to election results11/14/10 11:43pmFiona BrunnerAcross the nation people expressed their disappointment with the democratic leadership. With the nations political balance at stake and an overwhelming republican win in the midterm elections, many students are unsure about the future effectiveness of the democratic party. "What they got done was the most that they can get done now that Congress is not entirely Democratic. I'm kind of disappointed and I don't expect them to get much done over the next years." "I don't know if the Democrats can turn it around because their party cohesion and party leadership is so terrible. Harry Reid almost deserved to lose, and I would not have cared much if he had lost. He's a terrible party leader because he's a pragmatist, not a visionary. Nancy Pelosi is a two-bit hack and I have very little respect for her. They care about getting things done, not about getting things done the way they're supposed to be done." The democrats lost control of the house among a storm of critical outcries. The loss can also be attributed to the apathy and low turn out of traditionally democratic voting bases. "If Obama can get the Republicans and the Democrats to actually come to some bipartisan understanding, then maybe, the Democrats can turn it around. Or, they just have to get more voters out since very little of the Democratic voting base voted during this election." "I went home to Connecticut to vote and they were like 'You're one of the only college students registered in your district.' That was interesting." Republicans took control of the House, but the democrats maintained a majority in the Senate, leaving both parties - and their supporters - hopeful about the upcoming years. "I was pretty disappointed." "I'm rather happy and excited that we're changing it up to a more Republican House." "I think it can turn around, perhaps even by 2012." "The Republicans won in a landslide, but it's okay because they aren't really going to do anything. There is going to be gridlock for the next two years on Capitol Hill. I'm just waiting for the next election where President Obama is going to win and the Democrats will steal not only the executive branch but also the House and the Senate." |
