Columbia faculty members are considering converting the Global Core from lecture courses to seminar classes. The number of Global Core classes offered is also set to increase. However, one obstacle to the implementation of this proposal is the economic crisis and the decline, or freeze, in new hirings.

The Global Core requirement replaced Major Cultures in 2008 and is designed to address several world cultures comparatively.
